CLAZOMENAE MEMORIES
On my cycling route, I often noticed the name Klazomenai—businesses named after archaeological sites, such as guesthouses, grocery stores, or restaurants, are typically small and old. At first, the name was just another signpost along the way. But over time, its presence lingered, and I found myself drawn into its history.
Urla has long been a crossroads of major civilizations, with Ionia playing a particularly influential role in shaping its identity. As I researched its past, I realized that my first projection mapping show in Urla should be dedicated to this civilization.
The Ionians were among the first to seek explanations for natural phenomena beyond mythology, laying the foundation for rational thought, science, and democracy. Their contributions also extended to architecture, giving rise to the elegant Ionic column. Their thinking—curious, analytical, and forward-looking—resonates deeply with my artistic approach.
Even 2,200 years later, the people of Urla continue to engage with the land in much the same way, drawn to its rich flora and natural beauty. As I approach the first anniversary of moving here, I am increasingly excited about the potential for digital art projects that bridge history and contemporary creativity, offering new ways to experience the past through technology.
