A slaughterhouse in Budapest is the setting of a strangely beautiful love story. No sooner does Mária start work as the new quality controller than the whispers begin. At lunch the young woman always chooses a table on her own in the sterile canteen where she sits in silence. She takes her job seriously and adheres strictly to the rules, deducting penalty points for every excessive ounce of fat. Hers is a world that consists of figures and data that have imprinted themselves on her memory since early childhood. Her slightly older boss Endre is also the quiet type. Tentatively, they begin to get to know each other. Recognising their spiritual kinship, they are amazed to discover that they even have the same dreams at night. Carefully, they attempt to make them come true. This story of two people discovering the realm of emotions and physical desire, at first individually and then together, is tenderly told by director Ildikó Enyedi, but in a way that also exudes subtle humour. A film about the fears and inhibitions associated with opening up to others, and about how exhilarating it can be when you finally do.

For her eighth theatrical feature British director and screenwriter Sally Potter, who last took part in the Berlinale Competition with Rage in 2009, has invited a stellar cast to join her party. Beginning as a subtly witty comedy replete with sharp-tongued dialogue, the film later veers off into tragedy. When life can no longer be controlled by reason, people will fight tooth and nail to protect their seemingly stable existence.

Zaghaft gehen sie aufeinander zu, erkennen ihre Seelenverwandtschaft und stellen verwundert fest, dass sie nachts die gleichen Träume haben. Vorsichtig versuchen sie, diese in die Wirklichkeit zu überführen. Zärtlich, aber auch mit hintergründigem Humor erzählt Ildikó Enyedi von der Begegnung zweier Menschen, die zunächst jeder für sich und dann miteinander die Welt der Gefühle und des körperlichen Begehrens entdecken. Es geht um die Schwierigkeit und die Angst, sich zu öffnen; um das Glücksgefühl, wenn man sich schließlich auf einen anderen Menschen einlässt.

In ihrem achten Kinofilm lädt die britische Regisseurin und Drehbuchautorin Sally Potter, die zuletzt 2009 mit Rage im Wettbewerb der Berlinale vertreten war, namhafte Akteure zur Party. Was als Komödie mit hintersinnigem Witz und scharfen Dialogen beginnt, kippt in die Tragödie. Wenn dem Leben mit Argumenten nicht mehr beizukommen ist, wird unversehens um den Fortbestand der nur scheinbar gefestigten Existenzen gerungen.

Jake (Anton Yelchin) and Mati (Lucie Lucas) are two outsiders in the Portuguese city of Porto who once experienced a brief connection. He’s an American loner exiled from his family; she’s a French student abroad with her professor lover. One day they see each other from a distance at an archeological site and then again at a train station and a café, where Jake works up the courage to speak to Mati for the first time and they embark on a night of carefree intimacy.

This experience is looked at years later using fragments from Mati and Jake’s lives apart, both of them still haunted by the powerful moments they shared. Working backwards and forwards with time, and alternating a narrow and wide visual canvas, Porto reveals the depths of a surprising encounter, eventually settling into the one unforgettable night when Mati and Jake chanced upon feelings of love and passion that they never thought were possible.

Félicité is a proud and independent woman who works as a singer in a bar in Kinshasa. Whenever she goes on stage, she appears to leave the world and her everyday worries behind. Her audiences are quickly infected by the rhythm of her music and her powerful, melancholy melodies. But then one day Félicité’s son has a terrible accident. Whilst he is in hospital she desperately tries to raise the money needed for his operation. A breathless tour through the impoverished streets and the wealthier districts of the Congolese capital ensues. One of the bar’s regulars is a man named Tabu who has been known to get carried away in every sense of the term. Tabu offers to help Félicité. Reluctantly, she accepts. After his spell in hospital, Félicité’s son has a hard time picking up his old life, but it is lady’s man Tabu of all people who manages to coax him out of his shell. Félicité’s sparsely furnished flat with its permanently defunct fridge becomes a mini utopia in a country that holds no hope for most of its population. The trio forms an eccentric community thrown together by fate, each of whom is free to go their separate ways together.

Marina and Orlando are in love and plan to spend their lives together. She is working as a waitress and adores singing. Her lover, twenty years her senior, has left his family for her. One night, when they return home after having exuberantly celebrated Marina’s birthday at a restaurant, Orlando suddenly turns deathly pale and stops responding. At the hospital, all the doctors can do is confirm his death.

Events follow thick and fast: Marina finds herself facing a female police inspector’s unpleasant questions, and Orlando’s family shows her nothing but anger and mistrust. Orlando’s wife excludes Marina from the funeral; she also orders her to leave the apartment – which on paper at least belonged to Orlando – as soon as possible. Marina is a transgender woman. The deceased’s family feels threatened by her sexual identity.

With the same energy she once used to fight for her right to live as a woman Marina, with head held high, now insists on her right to grieve. Even if her environment conspires against her, the film at least is entirely on her side, showing us a protagonist who, although increasingly side-lined, is nonetheless strong and worldly-wise – a truly fantastic woman.

Marina ist eine Transgender-Frau, und die Familie des Verstorbenen fühlt sich durch ihre sexuelle Identität bedroht.

Mit der gleichen Energie, mit der sie früher dafür gekämpft hat, als Frau zu leben, pocht Marina nun erhobenen Hauptes auf ihr Recht auf Trauer. Und wenn schon nicht ihre Umgebung, so ist doch der Film ganz auf ihrer Seite und zeigt die zunehmend ins Abseits gedrängte Protagonistin als starke, lebenskluge – fantastische – Frau.

Czech Photographer Josef Koudelka grew up behind the Iron Curtain and always wanted to know “what was on the other side”. Forty years after capturing the iconic images of the Soviet invasion of Prague in 1968, the legendary Magnum photographer arrives in Israel and Palestine. On first seeing the nine-meter-high wall built by Israel in the West Bank, Koudelka is deeply shaken and embarks on a four-year project in the region which will confront him once again with the harsh reality of violence and conflict.

Director Gilad Baram, Koudelka’s assistant at the time, follows him on his journey through the Holy Land from one enigmatic and visually spectacular location to another.

In each location – soon to become a new “Koudelka photo” – a new scene unfolds, gradually introducing us to Koudelka’s method of working and his perception of the world he is documenting as well as the people he encounters.

A fascinating dialogue emerges between Baram’s cinematography and Koudelka’s still photographs, as Baram places the photographer in his own breathtaking compositions.

Patiently he tried to explain at the time that "money should not allowed to be goods". He knew that money trade would undermine democracy. But more than that. Beuys boxed, chatted, lectured, and explained art to a dead hare. "Do you want to make a revolution without laughter?", he asks – laughing. His extended concept of art led him to the core of relevant social debates.

"I'm not an artist at all. Except if we see everyone as artists. I buy into that. Otherwise not."

Director Andres Veiel and his editors Stephan Krumbiegel and Olaf Voigtländer, in their furious, clever collage of innumerable, often previously unseen image and sound documents, depict the image of a unique human being and artist, whose restless creativity pushed boundaries. BEUYS is not a classic portrait, but an intimate view of humans, their art and ideas, exciting, provocative and astounding contemporary.
